Massive tractors and combine harvesters could be having a lasting impact on soil, a study suggests.

The researchers think the growing weight of farm machinery poses a threat to agricultural productivity.

Thomas Keller, professor of soil management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, says machinery should be designed not to exceed a certain load. However, the heft of modern harvesters is outweighed by long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs such as brontosaurus, which once roamed the Earth.

Such a poor piece of journalism ... doesn't even consider that it's not the weight of the equipment that causes the damage but rather the pressure (weight over area). Modern tyres exert a VERY low pressure on the soil (2 or 3 psi). Where as old narrow tyres exert 20-50 psi.

People want fast, easily obtainable food supplies. It comes at a cost.

Is this the long-lost Brexit benefit? Farming is bad for the soil, Brexit trashes UK farming, ergo Brexit is good for Britain.

Yet still the yields get bigger and bigger ! There’s alway a solution for every problem, why do the doom mongers alway shout about every little thing !

Stop farming with immediate effect!!! If you worked more hours and had a better job you could grow your own!!
