The settlement relates to alleged violations of commitments Facebook gave ahead of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Facebook has been told to restructure its privacy policies and relax founder Mark Zuckerberg's control over them as part of a regulatory settlement that will see it pay a record $5bn fine.

It emerged earlier this month that a regulator, the Federal Trade Commission , had voted to approve the penalty along party lines - with Democrats holding back because they wanted a harsher punishment. It was announced following an investigation into allegations the social media platform inappropriately shared the information of 87 million users with Cambridge Analytica - a British political consulting firm that has since closed down.

The FTC said it was clear the firm had broken repeated promises to it and its users on the issue of personal data. Under the terms of the settlement, Facebook's board is to create an independent privacy committee that removes"unfettered control by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg over decisions affecting user privacy".Its shares were down more than 2% in pre-market deals.
