Towns and cities need a radical overhaul to make them liveable during the even more intense heatwaves predicted in future

Mossbourne Parkside Academy in East London dates from 1898.But staff use blackout blinds to keep out the sun and internal doors are left open to encourage a through-draught. Children take regular shade breaks outside and drink plenty of water.

On a thermal camera it's clear to see the heat radiating from hard surfaces such as brick, steel, concrete and asphalt.Leaves use some of the sun's energy to evaporate water, keeping them - and the surrounding air - cooler. Many urban areas were built long before climate change began to accelerate."We want to see hundreds of thousands more trees in our cities and on our streets. There is so much more to do," he said.

Plane trees were widely planted in affluent boroughs and the centre of London in the 18th century, largely for aesthetic reasons."There's a frightening correlation between parts of our cities that have less green space with fewer trees and the lowest levels of income," said Mr Elliott.

While they’re at it they might as well take precautions against severe cold and snowy weather. Update roads to heated ones, triple glaze all windows and issue everyone with a snow shovel.

Oh go away, seriously.

How about leaving trees in place as they produce shade for summer and drink upto 360litres a day preventing flooding in wetter months! For every new house built, plant a tree in the garden with a preservation order on it!

Maybe some of the shower of **** that make decisions need to go to some of the country’s in the EU to understand how to do it properly. brokenbritain

What's the point in the 'going green' support then if we are going to make it liveable? Can't have one without the other

Currently melting in Spain, buy a hat or an umbrella…fucking moronic article!

Terrible news.

The Democrats need to wake up and stop pandering to their extremesMoving the Democrats towards the centre ground would not just be a shrewd political tactic: it could also be the beginning of a cure for American democracy. The stakes could not be higher This is literally the dumbest take Hell, just pander to average D voter. The average D wants police funded, doesn't know what a BIPOC is, believes in a secure border, and doesn't subscribe to radical gender theory. Drivel. I expect better from this rag.
