Staff at the Police Ombudsman's office in NI were informed of the appointment this week

An ex-RUC and PSNI officer who served with the force for 31 years has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Office of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland.

Laird’s departure was later followed by that of another senior figure in the police watchdog, with its Director of Current Investigations Susie Harper resigning in October. Anderson said: “Hugh brings a wealth of experience to the office in a career which has spanned both policing and contemporary police oversight.

When asked about whether any conflict of interest would exist given Hume's time serving within the ranks of the PSNI, the PONI said any potential conflicts of interest had been explored as part of the recruitment process. Before moving across the border, Hume served as a police officer in the Police Service of Northern Ireland for almost 3I years.
