The ex-chief executive admitted it was 'possibly' her hope that a mediation scheme with subpostmasters would 'minimise compensation'
She denied trying to close down a review into the Horizon software that led to wrongful convictions of sub-postmasters, and rejected that the Post Office’s executive team hid “dirty laundry” from the board. Mr Beer went on to ask: “Why did you write an email in which you expressed a hope that mediation was a means to avoid or minimise compensation?”“A hope?” Mr Beer said. “Possibly yes,” Ms Vennells replied. In an email exchange revealed to the inquiry between Ms Vennells and colleagues Mark Davies and Martin Edwards in 2013, the former chief executive wrote: “There are two objectives, the most urgent being to manage the media.
This was shown immediately after she told the inquiry she would not have taken action just based on one colleague’s opinion.Ms Vennells started answering by saying “I really don’t remember it relating to…” but was interrupted by groans from the audience, which were in turn interrupted by inquiry chair Williams.
Mr Beer asked how just a handful of cases could answer the question of whether there were systemic defects in Horizon that led to wrongful convictions.
