The 25-year-old would not be drawn on whether she will follow in the footsteps of Bobby Moore, England’s 1966 World Cup winning captain, in being given a statue outside Wembley.
However, while the Arsenal defender noted how the tournament has captured the attention of fans around the world, she suggested there was still a long way to go to ensure women are treated equally in and out of sport. “I’ve only ever been involved in this workplace, in football, but I think in most workplaces around the world, women have a few more battles to face and overcome,” she added.
Williamson, who this time 10 years ago was a teenager watching Team GB beat Brazil at London 2012, hopes England’s run to the Euro 2022 final will “open the eyes of somebody who views women with the potential to be equal to her male counterpart, I think that makes a change in society. “I think that’s a powerful message that we have the power to, in a typically male-dominated environment, these strides that we take forward can impact everybody on a large scale.”
