Former DUP leader Edwin Poots accuses the EU of 'playing fast and loose' with peace in Northern Ireland, warning that unionists are 'tired of hearing threats' over the NI Protocol. IainDale

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced plans in the House of Commons to suspend parts of the Northern Ireland protocol if no agreement can be reached with the European Union.Iain Dale was joined live from Belfast by the former leader of the DUP Edwin Poots to reflect on the move. He argued that the Foreign Secretary's decision has been motivated by a lack of action from Brussels.

Iain took exception to Mr Poots: "It's the UK government that's threatening the European Commission, isn't it?" The DUP MLA stood firm: "We're really tired of threats coming against the United Kingdom and against the Northern Ireland peace process."

IainDale He supported Brexit and imposed it on NI !!! Such Liars.

IainDale The Protocol is legally binding, unlike Brexit which never was. The Protocol is also recognised as International law. The EU is NOT the one 'playing fast and loose' with peace in Northern Ireland as it's not the one looking to break the law and support criminality.

IainDale Seeing how 🇬🇧 government and the DUP are handling things in NI makes me think that NI could be reunified to Ireland 🇮🇪 sooner than expected.

IainDale All that mess was initiated by UK Brexit decision so it is all on UK. It is a Uk problem that UK needs to solve and not expect europe to roll over and just take whatever UK cooks up .

IainDale Peace because of a piece of paper? Just don't fucking run around killing each other. It's your choice.

IainDale Listening to edwinpootsmla you'd think the average NI citizen buys their food at M&S. Im not certain but i suspect its only a privileged few who buy their food there. In GB the tories sneer at the Islington elite who shop at M&S but in NI they're happy to be associated with them

IainDale The DUP wouldn’t sign the GFA - they are actively, and demonstrably, opposed to the peace process. This is a problem of their own making.

IainDale edwinpootsmla was fairly bluffing on the Hawaii example. Should be made correct the record. Or can some agriculture ministers continuously get away with uttering sweet bovine excrement. Can we put a check in that?

IainDale Edwin Pots...

IainDale Why is it the only NI politicians I see quoted on LBC are the DUP?

IainDale Ex dup leader who lasted 3 weeks*

IainDale The DUP are turkeys voting for Christmas

IainDale Fossel who doesn't belive in fossels wants to be taken seriously

IainDale Hard and loose? Ha!! Don't be ridiculous. They are just applying the law

IainDale Didn’t the DUP get extra funding to prop up the Tory government a few years back. Supporting Brexit. Bet they feel silly now. If only one person had warned them.

IainDale I think Mr Poots needs to look closer to home to blame.

Boris Johnson WILL tear up Northern Ireland protocol if EU won't actBoris Johnson will stand firm today on his threat to ditch parts of the post-Brexit deal on Northern Ireland if the EU doesn't back down. Why do that, when the people of NI are happy enough with arrangement? Is because NI is still flourishing as part of the EU? Hows that oven ready deal going? I know NI has historical special circumstances, but doesn’t it seem odd that 40% of electorate DUP voters now need to be listened to, whereas 48% opposition to Brexit across UK as a whole and majority opposition in Scotland need to shut-up and “accept the will of the people”?!
