BRITAIN and the EU are said to be “closing in” on a draft Brexit deal this afternoon ahead of Michel Barnier’s midnight deadline. Several EU sources said a breakthrough is on the …

"A big step forward needs to happen today," he said earlier.

"If the deal can't be done today or tomorrow then the leaders will have to decide what kind of mandate they want to give Michel Barnier and the UK side will have to respond as well as to how to proceed." A spokesperson for the French President said there was "positive momentum" but stressed "we cannot say if it will land on the good side tonight".

And an upbeat Jacob Rees Mogg said the government was “near a conclusion” with Brexit and that “big changes are happening” regarding the current impasse. If Boris doesn't seal a deal in time for the summit, it's unlikely he will have a proposal to put forward to MPs on Saturday. The next 36 hours of talks are deemed to be crucial to crack a legal solution on customs and consent.
