In his pursuit of consistency, Erik ten Hag is looking to settle on an established side in the coming weeks. It is far easier said than done.

The international break could come at the ideal time for United, given it will give injured players a chance to get themselves closer to match fitness and Ten Hag an opportunity to take a look at how he can fix the mess they find themselves in. Ten Hag still needs to settle on a defined role for the Scotland international; it is clear that his workrate and determination are needed in a side that lacks an identity. There is great hope for Kobbie Mainoo, highly rated by the manager, though expectations must be tempered for a teenage talent whose development could actually be hampered by a prolonged role in this dysfunctional side.

Mount or Fernandes could fill in on the wing if required, though that would be another sign of defeat for a side that has invested so heavily in finding a long-term solution. That is easier said than done.
