EPA Takes Over Cleanup of Toxic Ohio Train Derailment

JOHN SEEWER and MICHAEL RUBINKAM / APEAST PALESTINE, Ohio — Federal environmental regulators on Tuesday took charge of the cleanup from the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment and chemical burn and ordered Norfolk Southern to foot the bill.

“The Norfolk Southern train derailment has upended the lives of East Palestine families, and EPA’s order will ensure the company is held accountable for jeopardizing the health and safety of this community,” EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said in a statement ahead of a planned news conference with the governors of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

He added that he knows the order “cannot undo the nightmare that families in this town have been living with, but it will begin to deliver much needed comfort for the pain that Norfolk Southern has caused.”

This is a very good thing for the country and for Ohio and make no mistake about it all voters will defend the familys of PALESTINE unit the village center and our neighbors

I’m confused - wouldn’t Norfolk be required to clean this up anyway

I've mentioned before on different threads - where is the data to back up the statement that 'the water is clean'? How often is the data gathered? GPS coordinates of data. What was measured: soil, waterways, tap water etc. I'm not saying the data doesn't exist, but where is it?

I'm SURE the railroad doesn't EVEN have the facilities to clean up a mess of this magnitude.

Finally DeWine isn't letting Norfolk supervise their own destruction.

Brave and bold agreements. Wherein lies the store responsibility for the accident? Railroad Chapter 11 bankruptcy? Contested ways, means, for remediation scope and implementation? Long term contaminant health damages?

What's the big hurry?

No thanks to the governor of Ohio.
