Environmentalist Carmen Danae On The Powerful Message Behind Her Vogue #Reset Challenge Submission

In stark contrast with the apparently pristine natural beauty of the original quartet of images, Danae’s final submission highlights the fragility of the Dominican Republic’s – and the world’s – most spectacular landscapes. Shot in the lesser-visited Bajo Yuna Mangrove National Park a few hundred metres away, it shows a golden sand beach covered in litter and other detritus.

“The Dominican Republic is one of the most beautiful places on earth,” Carmen says, speaking over the phone from California. “That’s why it’s so shocking to be confronted with an image like that. We’ve got to consider what this will mean for future generations. These ecosystems have been around for millions of years – now we’re going to lose them in a few decades if no changes are made.

For Danae, the situation in her home corner of the Dominican felt like a parable – one that could help galvanise us to tackle a worldwide issue. “I hope that most people who look at this image see not the Dominican Republic, but themselves,” she explains. “This is not the Dominican Republic’s issue. This is a human issue. We’ve all used plastic water bottles. We’ve all opened packages filled with styrofoam. It’s my fault. It’s your fault. It’s humanity’s fault.

It’s this sentiment that resonated with Enninful, who chose the image of Bajo Yuna Mangrove National Park as one of his favourite #Reset covers, alongside photographs of everything from Icelandic waterfalls to California deserts. “I also felt it was important to include an image that serves as a warning to all of us: that of a beach, littered with plastic,” Enninful explains of his final top-10 selection.
