England manager Gareth Southgate will submit a 55-man provisional World Cup squad to FIFA this week, with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez one of many hoping to be included.
Southgate has plenty of headaches to resolve, especially in defence, due to an increasing amount of injuries to key players. Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been heavily relied on by the Three Lions boss, but the former Leicester City centre-half is currently injured and horrifically out of form.
For the matches against Italy and Germany, the United man was partnered in defence with Tottenham’s Eric Dier, who made his first appearance for his country since 2020.
