England coach looks increasingly likely to exit after struggling against biggest nations - unless his team can pull off ultimate victory

That was a tournament, where the team also went in as defending champions, that pushed Buttler and Mott to the brink of the exit door.

Three one-sided wins against associate nations Oman, Namibia and the US have done much of the heavy lifting during a campaign in which England have lost two of their three contests against Test-playing nations. There have been plenty of tournaments down the years where England have lost to associate nations – including the Netherlands at the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.. Yet it is highly likely that only winning this tournament will be enough for Mott, at least, to keep his job.understands the England & Wales Cricket Board has already started looking at potential replacements who might come in if this World Cup campaign is deemed sub-par.

When England won in Australia two years ago, they beat New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan in succession to lift the trophy. It was a campaign that contained a shock first-round defeat by Ireland but the team got the job done and brought home the trophy to unite both global white-ball crowns.
