The bill blocking automatic release of convicted terror offenders is approved by the House of Lords.

Sunderland shopkeeper Mohammed Zahir Khan, 42, had been set to be freed after serving half of his sentence for encouraging terrorism.

Some offenders will have pleaded guilty on the basis that they would be given a sentence with automatic early release at the half-way point.Read more from our legal correspondent Clive Coleman. Lawyers for some of the inmates are believed to be preparing a legal challenge, but ministers claim they are not extending sentences, merely changing the way they are administered.

Who on earth would even stand in the way of new laws to protect law abiding, UK citizens anyway?

Shouldn't have needed to go to the lords in the first place. 😡

Rightly so , the fact they can do half is laughable , should be a life sentence .

So they’re let out later in the year or next year - Makes little difference to the problem of radicalisation in prisons - they’re still gonna be a threat later. So what’s the Govt doing to actually deal with the problem.

It should also come with a complimentary death penalty too for those liable!
