Are there enough public chargers for all the EV drivers who will need them?
The current number of public chargers is "nowhere near enough" says Paul Wilcox, the UK managing director of Vauxhall. "A hatchback [car] currently has around 200-250 miles range." By the end of the decade, he says better batteries will push that distance by many miles. In a nutshell, these cars are expected to be able to travel much further on a single charge in the future. The majority of households in the UK, some 18 million , either have, or could offer, off-street parking for at least one vehicle. according. However, According to the Competition and Markets Authority that leaves more than eight million households without access to home charging, including some people living in flats.
The technology needs to drastically improve and the purchase cost reduce significantly. One big issue is how much range you lose in winter.. If hydrogen could be produced cheaply and environmentally, I'd go for that instead.
Some one needs to invented a lockable cover for home charging. If you leave your car plugged in & go indoors what stopping someone plugging their car into your power. I don't drive, don't plan on owning a car. My husband would hire when needed or use taxi.
Too expensive to buy, too expensive to fix if something goes wrong like the battery. Second hand ones are miss as most likely will need expensive replacement parts. Second hand petrol cars are still the most likely & affordable options.
Finland have car parking that includes charge port. There is NO parking allowed on the streets and you can't park in an electric bay. So the only way to drive is with an electric car and even where you park you can charge. They even have car share where you just tap pay drive.
We have 2nd hand leaf. Range arround 120 miles. This will cover 99% of our journeys without using public charge network. 10,000 miles less then £200 per year. This is the answer you need
It would nice to afford one
Having read the article it is, as I suspected, a white washing of the currently insurmountable problems attached to EV’s. Cancel your licence and stop funding this drivel.
They (BBC) did not ask whether electric cars are cleaner, and versus our charging power production means/technocracy, they aren't, so far. They may, in fact, be much dirtier... The most efficient machinery was first-offered at RAF Lakenheath in 1980. Wilbur & Orville didn't...
One question I have, will BMW get AppleCar play working properly ever cause it's shite.
Electric cars at the moment are bullshit. Don't have the range, don't have the charging points and they're pain to service.
I think either the charging port can be added to the price of the electic cars & longer distance batteries would be great. My work place had installed 3 car charging ports a few yrs back in the indoor parking lot.
Most of the pollution from modern vehicles, whether they be petrol, diesel or electric, is from braking & tyres not from the engine
Another question, if the government are pushing for EVs then why are they also not pushing landlords to install chargers in every property they own? 👀
I normally google map the distance of the destination there and back so I wouldn't need a charging port and fully charge at home before setting out.
Until charging times come down to the time in takes to fill up a petrol car, the range extends to the distances that we occasionally drive, and the number of charging points increases substantially EV won’t take off. How would 100k cars get to the West Country on a summer weekend
We should all start using electric cars 🚗 so we don’t have to pay high prices for petrol/diesel...
It’s not been long since Labour government used public money to scrap petrol cars to replace with diesel one. Now Government is demonising diesel. Will this happen to electric cars?
So they are tax exempt at the minute due to zero emissions. When the government are no longer receiving the amount of tax from diesel & petrol, do you not think they will just introduce a new tax that then covers all vehicles electric or not?
What will happen to the existing diesel and Petrol cars?
Cost of private charging in places is 50p+ per kWh and it's rising InstaVoltUK has shamelessly easier their prices 10p per kWh in less than a year. A car doing 4 mile per kWh is costing about 12.5p a mile using these chargers.Cheaper than fossil fuels but not a huge saving.
Why can't we tip it over and put are own poundshop batteries in My sons car goes for ages
Reading through the replies I see nothing but opportunity 🤣🤣🤣 Keep it up folks.
Yes not enough range 😡😡😡😡
Because mining the resources to create and build millions of electric vehicles is so environmentally friendly never mind charging them.
The Govt aren't going to lose £3bn a year in tax revenue without replacing it somehow. Not everyone has the ability to charge their car at home. Hybrids will be the way forward for the majority I would imagine
Let me know when you can get one that can tow a 1450kg caravan for 250 miles without needing to be recharged.
55 plate electric car? 15 miles range? :)
Let me know when i can get one for five grand and the batteries aren’t f**ked
