I made the chair of each Opportunity Area board someone who was both independent yet also deeply connected to the local area. For example, in the North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area, the chair was Sir Martin Narey. He had a wealth of expertise from his time running the Prison Service and children’s charity Barnardo’s but had originally grown up in Scarborough and was passionate about seeing improvement in the local region.
