'At times, Edinburgh felt… how do I put this? SO white.'

international performance festivalThe city’s streets burst with creativity, possibility, and large amounts of choice but, in some ways, it can feel like Edinburgh Fringe is stuck in its past and refusing to reflect its present.

To be more accurate, I am not new to the experience of feeling isolated due to race. The arts, education systems, performance, theatre world – all of these spaces have a very prominent race problem. Spending a month in Edinburgh with the trials of doing daily shows, press, reviews, late nights, it wasn’t my work that exhausted me, rather the elongated feeling of not seeing others that look like you occupy public space.

I wonder why the responsibility to solve arts’ racial problem is always placed on those already exhausted by the issue? Or notable initiatives like Fringe Of Colour, started by Jess Brough: a festival-wide database and ticket scheme that lists all the shows in Edinburgh written, performed by or starring artists of colour. They also partner with the artists and venues to offer free tickets to people of colour to see the shows.

Oh dear. Another one that’s seen the bandwagon. Hopefully after Brexit people will hush unless they have real reasons. So white so fucking what. I go black dominated areas how can I say this it’s so black.

But It’s a white peoples land so where must they go?

How racist is that statement?

I believe people of colour choose not to go to these events. I see this at the ballet. Predominantly the audience is white.........yes it’s expensive if you want the front seat so the tallest person doesn’t sit in front of you. We all need to start going & making a noise.

'What is nandos white'?racist!

At Times Edinburgh fringe felt so white... what does that even mean? What is the feeling of ‘white’? What is racial privilege? How is lack of skin tones a problem? And how do you ‘solve’ this problem, without being racist?

So? Is that a problem?

Scotland is 96.02% white so.... what were you expecting?

how do I put this? And the point of his statement is? No-one can force non-white people into the crowd or go and live in Edinburgh or be around in the streets just so he can nod at them. If he was born and bred in this country why is he any different to all the other people?

Obviously not you....

Who cares?
