Easter Sats revision classes 'a growing trend'

"I think children would be better off in the Easter holidays, absolutely, if they have been set some homework and if that homework is useful and productive, they should be doing that.

"But they should also be doing enjoyable, engaging things in their own time, with their own friends, spending time with their families, which is all a critical part of a healthy childhood." General secretary Chris Keates said:"The growing trend of Easter Sats classes in primary schools is a worrying reflection of the high-stakes accountability regime they operate in.Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner said:"Our pupils are the most tested in the world, but there is no evidence that the current high-stakes testing regime improves teaching and learning."

Last week, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced he would scrap Sats if his party came to power, saying the move would help improve teacher recruitment and retention. Instead, Labour would introduce alternative assessments which would be based on"the clear principle of understanding the learning needs of every child," he said.He said the move would"keep parents in the dark" by preventing from knowing how good their child's school is at teaching maths, reading and writing.

They'll be putting them down coalmines again soon. I'm glad I was allowed a childhood.

Madness SATs are not needed they are narrowing the curriculum and destroy h creativity and the development of life skills

No school should have children in over the holidays. Their prep for exams and coursework should be completed in school time. They should be encouraged to revise independently over the holidays, at the time that suits them and means they get time for: fun; family; friends; R & R.

No no no no 🙄

Stop schools having them! No wonder they are stressed!

If schools need to do this to prepare children for the tests, they're not doing their job properly.

Teachers' union says kids should be spending time at home with families. Ministers say the tests are important for children. Nobody seems to care what the children's natural guardians - the parents have to say about it, any longer.

Sad.

Labour will scrap Sats and let teachers teach, vows Jeremy CorbynParty leader says he will relieve pressure so schools can deliver rich and varied curriculum The tests to see that you learned are a part of the problem. A larger part is the actual curriculum which assumes that a scholarly education is superior to learning a trade. We have more jobs open which don't require a four-year degree, yet we push a college mentality on kids. Abolish League Tables while you're at it. I'd happily see the year six sats abolished, my daughter's school insisted parents had to pay for revision and work books, 25 books! They started sats work in September and only stopped as Sats began cue nervous breakdowns

Opinion: I voted to boycott Sats because these useless tests are ruining our education systemI want my students to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to help them to navigate and ultimately transform the world we live in today. Agonising over rigorous testing won't help them Tests are an indication of retained knowledge. Its the proof of education and they should stay in one form or another! Do private schools have to run them? Interesting. The article states 98% of Heads believe SATS puts unnecessary pressure on teachers. That primary school leaders are disposed of if their children “underperform” and teacher pay is also linked to their students’ SATs results. But it's all about the kids don't you know
