Patsy Palmer's older brother Albert Harris is preparing to check into a detox centre as he battles to beat his addiction demons

EastEnders star Patsy Palmer returned to the show with a big smile, but behind the scenes, she's dealing with family heartache. Her older brother is battling to overcome his addiction problems. Fans saw Patsy, 51, come back as the feisty Bianca Jackson on the soap.

Albert got out of HMP Rochester in 2022 after serving five years for armed robbery in East London. It was his second time in prison - he served another five-year sentence for the same crime in Bristol in 2010. Albert shared that he hasn't spoken to his famous sister for about a year, but he's eager to mend their relationship. "I know I can have an alternative life," he confessed.

Albert revealed that he was the one who first introduced Patsy to acting after spotting a newspaper advert for the Anna Scher Theatre in Islington, North London. He was 10 and his sister was just five when they landed their first roles, in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Patsy scored her big break starring as Bianca in EastEnders in 1993 when she was just 21 years old. We last got to see her in the series more than four years ago. Earlier this month, we saw her character back on our screens when she received a visit from her stepdaughter Whitney Dean in Milton Keynes.

Albert, who goes to three or four Narcotics Anonymous meetings every week, said he's only used heroin twice since getting out of jail and hasn't for the last year. He shared: "I just don't want to be that person any more. I know I'm ill and I know if I think I'm better and stop going to meetings, I'll become addicted again. I'm doing a lot of work with myself... ultimately, I just long to be free and live a normal life.

In her book, All of Me, Patsy talked about how she used to come to the set of EastEnders after partying all night and taking drugs. She wrote: "Often, I arrived at work after partying and being off my head on drugs all night. Sometimes, I was still high on ecstasy. I don't think anyone realised. They thought my exuberant moods were natural."
