Survivors of the earthquake that has devastated huge areas of Turkey and Syria are too afraid to sleep inside, because of fears more buildings will collapse.
Jeremy Smith, an aid worker with the British Red Cross, said that survivors “don’t want to return home because they’re scared”. “We were using big buildings on ground level as shelters, but people were refusing because of the psychological trauma. People prefer to stay in tents and on the streets lighting fires,” Mr Aboulgasem said.
But Mr Smith warned that the reconstruction efforts were “not a matter of months but a years-long process”, with enormous damage to physical infrastructure and thousands left with life-changing injuries and long-term psychological trauma.
