Universal Credit claimants are being alerted that they may need to hold tight for up to two months before seeing a hike in their payments. The Department for Work and Pensions declared that from 8 April, benefits including Universal Credit will see an uplift of 6.7%.
Yet due to how Universal Credit is configured, factoring in your "assessment period" which takes account of monthly circumstances such as earnings and savings, the revised increased rate won't apply until a fresh Universal Credit assessment period commences on or post 8 April.
BBC Radio 4's Money Box programme heard from Sandra Hardial, a programme researcher who cautioned people that contrary to what might be hoped, the money won't materialise immediately. She underscored: "The six million people on Universal Credit face the longest wait. The DWP has told Money Box that none of them will get the higher rate before the 14th of May and some will have to wait until the 13th of June.
Universal Credit consists of a "standard allowance" in accordance with your age and whether you're claiming solo or in partnership. On top of this base amount, you could potentially receive additional payments - say if a child is in your care, or if you're medically unfit to work. Once your basic entitlement is calculated, any additional amounts you're eligible for are added to reach the total amount before deductions. Deductions might apply if you're employed, have savings, or owe money to the DWP, reports the Mirror.Single under 25: £311.68 a month.Joint claimants, one or both 25 or over: £617.60 a month.
