Twice as many men die from drug-related deaths, but cocaine deaths among women surged last year
About two-thirds of all deaths from drug poisoning were due to drug misuse, the ONS said - meaning the underlying cause was drug abuse or addiction, or they involved illegal drugs. The ONS said rates of drug poisoning have been on a "steep upward trend" since 2012 due to rises in heroin and cocaine deaths.
"The tragic number of drug-related deaths should be all the evidence the government needs to substantially invest in addiction services, before more lives are needlessly lost," she said.Niamh Eastwood, director of drug policy charity Release, said two Parliamentary committees - the Health and Social Care Select Committee and the Scottish Affairs Select Committee - had called for reform of drug policy to tackle these deaths.
You have a choice initially, do coke, don’t do coke. I chose don’t & lived.
26% shit we better have a lockdown. Killing more than COVID.
If you don’t want to die don’t take it-simples
Fewer rich people is okay by me.
Those that do it of there own free will, it’s their own fault, at the beginning you always have a choice
Fucking amateurs!
Makes a change from Covid
Public Health England should consider looking at the possibility of making drug testing kits readily available through pharmacies to the general public, how many lives would be saved if they knew what they were taking
People in the comments blaming this on COVID are possibly the most naïve people to have ever existed.
Disturbing.
Drug deaths overall are up. With 2 thirds being men. The woke, sexist bbc is directing the narrative again. defundBBC
I lost someone to cannabis once, lucky I found them at McDonalds a couple of hours later
Will be even worse this year with lockdown.
It takes months, sometimes years to be seen for your mental health and that was before this. People turn to other things and if it doesn't kill them it can get them locked up & ruin their life forever. We need more funding for mental health services & to decriminalise drug use.
Presumably that’s your stereotypical female with a coke habit
Sad that we don't invest in the underlying causes that often drive drug mis use ...some may be recreational but it's often a way to dull pain. MentalHealth support is needed not criminalization. women drugs overdose
Its because its mashed with toxic chemicals. Get a reputable dealer.
corruption all around.
legalize it
Of course, this is what happens when you lock people away from a social life, they turn to other things to cope. One of many cases I expect we'll see of increased deaths linked to the Covid response being worse than the disease itself.
Oh, snap! Who knew drugs were dangerous!? They are so much fun!
Blame covid...
Lockdown needed!
You keep locking the people down. What did you expect?
Just for the taste of it.
