The Mournemen lost out to an injury-time Jason Duffy winner in Clones and begin their Tailteann Cup campaign this weekend rather than looking forward to a provincial final

Pierce Laverty has a game with Down this weekend, just not the one he wanted or expected to play in. Instead of bidding for Down’s first Ulster title in 30 years against Donegal at a packed St Tiernach’s Park in Clones on Sunday, they’ll be playing Limerick in a Tailteann Cup opener the day before at a deserted Pairc Esler .

“It was obviously a sore one, it's been a sore one all week. We were back with the club for a week and we went back to training there on Sunday. “I suppose the only way to mix it with the big teams is to get up the divisions and to play them week in, week out so I think that will stand to us a good bit. Look, we just have to try to approach this competition and try to win it.”

“I don't think we won a game that year. I was injured most of that year but I don't think we won a single game that year. It was before Lav took over.
