It a real mystery then why most dogs make eye contact with a human stranger, and start wagging their tail if they see a smile. Alternative headline: study shows it's methods couldn't identify how dogs perceive faces.

we have 2 dogs, the eldest one will bring his toy and try to put it in your hand, i guess as a pup he was only around humans so this is his learned behaviour for play the young one always had the older dog around so he brings the toy to your face to play as his learned behaviour

Just did an experiment. One of our Springers was walking past me, I turned my head and made eye contact, she stopped and reciprocated plus a waggy tail. I then turned my head away and then discreetly turned back. She had also turned away! QED!
