Doctors are leaving Northern Ireland for better pay across the border in the Republic of Ireland or further afield for better pay and conditions, the head of the BMA in Northern Ireland has said.
Health Trusts across Northern Ireland have been forced to cancel or postpone thousands of appointments due to the industrial action. "Those are the two biggest factors, there are other factors as well of course. If other countries are paying higher wages, then you lose doctors from here and we see doctors going to Australia and New Zealand.
"But also what those doctors tell me is, it's not just the higher pay it's the fact that they can help patients better. Asked about the disruption faced by patients due to the strike action, Dr Black said: "I think it's true that the patients are being disrupted. "HSC Trusts will work to mitigate the impact as much as possible and will publish more information next week on affected service areas. Significant disruption is expected not only on the two strike days but over following days.
