Pulmonologist James Mahoney, 62, lost his life to Covid-19 on April 27 while working at the University Hospital of Brooklyn. Staff there complained of a lack of personal protective equipment early-on in the outbreak.
He complained of a fever during the second week of April, but decided to continue consulting with patients via video-link while isolating at home. The medic was admitted to University Hospital’s emergency room on April 20, by which time he could barely walk.Dr Mahoney, a father of three, was transferred to the Tisch Hospital in Manhattan on April 26 to receive treatment from a blood oxygenation machine that his workplace did not have.
‘One of the sad stories of this pandemic is that we’re losing people that we couldn’t afford to lose.’ The late doctor began his career at the University Hospital, which serves a poor, mainly black neighborhood, in 1982 – and never left. He worked through the Aids epidemic, the 9/11 terror attacks and Hurricane Sandy, with colleagues distraught at losing Dr Mahoney in such unexpected circumstances.Dr Mahoney was a much-loved figure at the hospital, and ignored its strict hierarchy which usually saw doctors only socialize with each other.
