Masks are part of an army of tools that would prevent the virus spreading eventually dying out. If all wore one then 95% effective if worn right. Add hand washing,socially distancing, temp checking, self isolating, testing and tracking then it's around 99.99%.

For articles like the one in this thread and the one linked below, and for such misleading headlines, the Independent should feel ashamed. The coverage during this pandemic finally convinced me to never read this newspaper again.
