As hail and wind battered the Fleetwood coast this morning , the blustery conditions did little to remove the fug that has been hanging over the town for months.
As the issue continues to plague the lives of locals, last week the Environment Agency stated Transwaste had been in breach of their environmental permit and was instructed to cap the problem cell area, giving a completion date of May 15. Neil Pilling is an admin of the Facebook group, Action against Jameson Road, Fleetwood Landfill site gas smell which has amassed over 2,300 members. He lives around a mile from the site itself and smells the landfill site on a regular basis.
The community advocate explains the smell can be experienced on different days, with a change in the wind direction meaning other areas around Fleetwood are affected at different times. "Let's be honest, its a landfill site with toxic gases," Neil added. "When that smell hits you, or it's in your direction, it's absolutely nothing you can do to stop. It makes you think, what are you breathing in?"
