from 3pm BST on 23 April, the 14-minute film chronicles the making of Christian Dior’s autumn/winter 1949 haute couture collection at 30 Avenue Montaigne, and is narrated by the fabled designer himself.
Debuted just two years after Dior revolutionised postwar fashion with his Corolle line in February of 1947, this collection included the Milieu du Siècle line, which featured a number of spectacular gowns, including Dior’s now-iconic Venus and Junon dresses.
Among the other pieces of note? The designer’s Cygne Noir, or Black Swan, dress in ebony satin and velvet, which features panels of silk to create the appearance of a gigantic bow at the hips; strapless asymmetric “Gruau” gowns named after Dior illustrator René Gruau; and the heavily draped Pisanelle cocktail dress, which nodded to the silhouettes found in the paintings of Renaissance master Antonio Pisanello in the 15th century.
