Diogo Jota injury blow sums up major problem Liverpool must solve

The 2023/24 campaign did little but reaffirm what was already well known about Diogo Jota at Liverpool.

On the other, the campaign was the second in succession where Jota spent huge swathes of it on the sideline, injured and unable to contribute to Jurgen Klopp's team. How different might Liverpool's title hopes have been had Jota been available more? The inability to field him in home draws with Manchester United and Arsenal shortly before Christmas hurt. The Seleccao international marked his comeback with a goal in the 2-0 win at Burnley on Boxing Day and a spell of fitness coincided with a hot streak in front of goal as he bagged six times between December 26 and February 10.

"We have world-class players and when we have them it's easier," Jota said after he and Nunez scored a brace apiece to beat Bournemouth. "But we are Liverpool so when we don't have them we still have a good team. We can replace them and share the cost of the game between us to keep going."
