A fatal accident inquiry into the death of a hero skipper who fell from a fishing boat while trying to rescue a colleague is set to begin in June.
But the owner of the fishing boat ‘Reul A Chuain’, a twin-rigged prawn trawler out of Mallaig, fell into the water after adverse weather caused the boat to roll as they tried to make their way back to Mallaig in the Highlands. Neither of the men were wearing personal flotation devices , a Marine Accident Investigation Branch report found.
The MAIB report said having seen the senior deckhand fall overboard, "the skipper's action to reach down to help him in the water below was probably instinctive and without thought for his own safety or the consequences". Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads on death investigations for COPFS, said: “The death of Lachlan Robertson occurred while in the course of his employment and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory.
