and Washington could mostly play one another in conference play. In sports that frequently utilize multi-day tournament play , there would be two or three weekends per season where the entire 20-team conference would gather in one place and stage an event loaded with games/matches that would count toward the conference standings. For example, the volleyball teams could gather in Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia for events.
Second, the league would have to find a buyer for an additional television package to fund the new members. They likely would be willing to take less than a full revenue share — assuming that smaller share is still more than they’d get from the Pac-12 — but we’re still talking about a package that would cost a network at least $200 million a year when much of the league’s premium inventory is already sold.
That would require some serious deal-making. When I interviewed Warren last month at the Sports Business Journal Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, he had an interesting response to a question I asked about ESPN. I had asked if it was a difficult choice to do a media rights deal without ESPN because of the network’s reach. Warren didn’t really answer that question; instead, he explained that he didn’t really consider any door closed on the media rights front.
I took this to mean that if the Big Ten were to pursue further expansion — particularly further westward expansion — that it would try to make a deal with ESPN for a package of games. Specifically, a package heavy on games that originate on the West Coast and kick off at 10 p.m. ET or later.
But if they were willing to expand, it might be possible to get ESPN and someone else to compete for that package enough to reach that magic dollar figure. Remember, while most of the Big Ten’s premium inventory is sold, we still would be talking about some valuable games.
