An inquest into student Ceara Thacker's death opened on Monday
Ceara Thacker, 19, was found dead in her halls of residence at the University of Liverpool in May 2018. Mr Thacker, of Guiseley, Leeds said the family kept in regular contact with her after she moved to university in September 2017.However Mr Thacker said the family were unaware she had had an overdose in February and believed she was continuing to take anti-depressant medication.Her father added: "We don't know why Ceara didn't feel able to tell us what was going on.
For those citing confidentiality laws , these are not absolute. Confidentiality can be broken if it would be of overall benefit and it is believed that the person lacks capacity to make the decision.
They R restricted by privacy laws. Do ppl forget those that go 2 uni R legally defined adults & R treated as such w/ the rights that come w/ it. A GP wudnt tell the parents why wud a uni?
Unless they rewrite the law, this will continue.
Any death is tragic and any death by suicide is tragic but we can’t know that it could have been avoided if her family had been notified of the situation even if we wish that were true.
Under GDPR, unless they have the student's consent, they cannot pass on that information - end of. Bit like telling a Doctor he has to tell family members about a patient's illness - they simply can't.
I cannot fathom the decision making that says it’s ok not to inform a parent of a child’s suicide attempt. Any one who faces this decision should ask if they would want to know if it were their child. I don’t know a parent who wouldn’t.
Poor kid, what a terrible waste.
