Dame Helen Mirren is just one of the stars offering money-can’t-buy access to their talents in an effort to lift collective spirits during this unprecedented period of global lockdown.

A month ago, witnessing an intimate performance by Dame Helen Mirren would have required a substantial financial outlay and an hour or two in a virtual queue on Ticketmaster. But thanks to a certain global pandemic, everyone can see the multiple Oscar, Golden Globe and Olivier Award-winner’s latest show – and it’s totally free.

Dame Helen, who is in isolation in Lake Tahoe on the border of California and Nevada in the US, has been passing the time by building snowmen, spotting squirrels outside her window, and latterly, reciting Shakespeare on Instagram. On Monday [23 March], the day the prime minister, Boris Johnson, instructed the British population to stay in their homes to help halt the spread of coronavirus, Mirren – whose illustrious career began with the Royal Shakespeare Company – offered a little light relief in the form of, the Bard’s most famous sonnet, apparently delivered from her kitchen table. “Sonnet for isolation,” was the actor’s caption.
