The best player in the best Leeds United team since 2002. That’s not a bad way of summing up the level Stuart Dallas got to during his time at Elland Road. There are so many players who have come to be synonymous with Marcelo Bielsa ’s tenure, but none can say they hit the heights Dallas did.
Pep Guardiola’s side, en route to being crowned Premier League champions, had won 27 of their 28 previous fixtures, in all competitions, when Bielsa’s side arrived in town. They had lost only three of their previous 48 games, running back to the start of that season. Exhausted by the mental toil of keeping this elite team out at the other end, Dallas, as he always did, found it within himself to dig out one last raid. He would outrun both John Stones and Fernandinho, hold off the former and then stick the ball through Ederson’s legs at the death.
Central defence was possibly the only position we did not see Dallas play during Bielsa’s tenure. There was even the odd foray in attack, though he eventually found his groove as a full-back or, latterly, a central midfielder.
