A father given a terminal breast cancer diagnosis after losing his mother and stepmother to the same disease will take part in a charity fashion show to raise awareness to help others – but he does not know how much time he has got left. Geoff Sweeney, 52, a charity director from Derby, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2020 after discovering a lump near his left armpit – but he very nearly ignored it.
Although Geoff’s prognosis is uncertain and he initially felt “absolutely desolate”, he now wants to give himself “the best possible chances of having the longest possible life”. He is planning to return to work later this month and, in his spare time, he wants to enjoy the “simple things” and spend as much quality time as possible with his wife Lyndsey, 46, and two children – Freya, 17, and Sophie, 14.
Speaking about the upcoming fashion show, he added: “Yes, breast cancer predominantly affects women, but having myself and another guy in The Show is important to represent that anybody, including men, can get breast cancer. So check yourself out, and if you’ve got any worries, don’t be too afraid to go to your doctor. You should never be too busy to put yourself first.”
“It was only when I fell off a climbing wall and bruised my chest that I was forced to check myself,” Geoff said. “I had bruises on my chest, and the bruises cleared up with the exception of this lump, but it wasn’t painful, it wasn’t noticeable, it was under the skin. He said: “I don’t know whether it was by luck or by design… it was a real sliding doors moment. I think if I had waited those two months to see whether had gone, it would have been too late.”
While it cannot be cured, there are treatments that can help control certain forms of the disease for some time and relieve symptoms to help people live well for as long as possible. Now, five months on, Geoff is currently undergoing chemotherapy which is having a “positive effect”, and his last scans showed there had been a 50% reduction in the tumours and he is feeling “stronger” than before.
