A family mediator working with UK hosts and Ukrainian refugees who are struggling to live together has warned of a looming ‘moment of crisis’ when the scheme’s the six month minimum stay period comes to an end
The family mediator is now working with charity National Family Mediation to offer free mediation to hosts and guests who are struggling to live together. The Local Government Association said councils “remain concerned about Ukrainian refugees presenting as homeless”, adding “numbers are continuing to rise”.
As of 26 July, about 119,000 visas have been issued to people through the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme, which allows Ukrainians and their families to come to the UK if they have a named sponsor under Homes for Ukraine. In another case, the parents in a Ukrainian family are unable to speak English and have to communicate through their teenage children.
Ms Stadnyk said introducing rules, for example around the use of utilities and having guests over, also “saves the relationship”, and can also help with the extra financial strain. “Sometimes if you set these rules you feel you are speaking to your guests like a child but in some situations speaking out saves the relationship.”
“Right now there are hundreds, maybe thousands of these situations. But these situations can be dealt with the help of a professional.”
At least they won't be deported to Rwanda ..
