The Migration Advisory Committee recommended the graduate visa stay in place as it is ‘not undermining’ the integrity and quality of higher education Home Secretary James Cleverly,Mr Cleverly and Rishi Sunak are set to make a decision in the coming days amid major Tory splits over immigration, and the latest net migration figures due next week.
A senior Government source meanwhile suggested a crackdown is still under consideration: “Legal migration is too high, and we’ve got to take steps to reduce that. The recent stats show we’ve made a good start.” “Therefore taking steps today to undermine funding to universities over the coming years and hinder their ability to develop homegrown talent as well is utterly counterproductive in reducing migration long-term.”
