Could we see new Covid measures before the new year? Boris Johnson is due to be briefed on the latest data today and is weighing whether restrictions are needed. 😷

The briefing by government scientists on Monday is one of a regular series of updates given to the prime minister, and he has not yet called a cabinet meeting or announced a recall of Parliament.

But Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, treasurer of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tories, has urged the PM to be "very cautious" before applying further restrictions. Asked whether he was concerned England was "out of step" with the rest of the UK in terms of Omicron restrictions, Sir Geoffrey replied: "I think it is the other way round. I think the [other nations] are out of step with England. I think they have been overly cautious."

Restrictions? To prevent people getting mild cold symptoms when practically the whole population has been triple vaccinated against a more severe variant that was causing relatively little harm?

yes should be restrictions in place as who will wear i mask in a crowed pub when drunk plus tho that spill on the hightstreet & put more strain on the Emerg services that already at breaking point

Restrictions should be placed on Boris…

Boris is due to brief with tax revenue data, if tax revenue is not satisfactory, restrictions may not needed. There fixed the headline for you.

Today may well be the day that all those who have already pre-announced that they “won’t be following any of the new restrictions”, finally find out exactly what they are, and can plan and tell the world exactly how they are going to go about that. Could be an interesting day…🙄

Schools ‘will open in January, vows Boris Johnson’ amid soaring Covid casesSchools will open their doors to students in January despite spiralling Covid cases, according to reports. Ignore COVID in schools, children are unlikely to be badly affected by it. In which case I sincerely hope he is putting a sizeable amount of money into ventilation, filters and meaningful guidance on mitigations, otherwise it won't be long before too many teachers and pupils are infected and schools will shut down due to a lack of staff or pupils. Madness.
