and confirmed by AstraZeneca, suggest the vaccine offers limited protection against mild and moderate disease caused by the variant.A spokesman for AstraZeneca said they had not yet been able to properly establish whether the jab would prevent severe disease and hospitalisation caused by the South Africa variant because those involved in the study had predominantly been young, healthy adults.
But the company expressed confidence that the vaccine would offer protection against serious cases, because it created neutralising antibodies similar to those of other coronavirus vaccines. The University of Oxford told Reuters news agency it was working with AstraZeneca to "optimise" the pipeline in vaccine production if it needed to adapt to a change in the virus.could be ready to deploy in the autumn if needed.
Dr Michael Head, a senior research fellow in global health at Southampton University, said that if the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was less protective against mild disease but prevented severe disease this would "still be a pretty good outcome". "I don't think we need to be too alarmed by [the reported findings] as yet but we do need to see the full study to work out what the implications really are," he told the BBC.

And what ‘study’ is this?
BenBrownBBC you just stated we should be careful with this study yet your organisation was one of the media companies who have created this panic and are responsible for those now worried about it. Do you take any responsibility
So all the vaccine willy waving by the government & MSM was a little bit premature? Quelle surprise.
So here you are BBCFergusWalsh ! You say its important people are not put off having the vaccine by media headlines and yet here is your employer with those very same headlines. Either your a hypcrite working for them or they are ignoring your own opinion. Which one is it?
I'm just curious how many people are waiting for the English Flag vaccine now !! 🤔🤣
Is this why they are now testing mixed vaccine regimes?
but it still works against severe disease, which is the most important thing for now.
The seriousness of this pandemic is widely underappreciated. The virus is mutating so rapidly, we may be one super-variant away from an extinction-level event. Continue with half-hearted restrictions, and CV-19 could soon become the virus humankind can't control.
As predictable, KBF and smiley-face selfish covidiots jumped on this to shout that they won't get any vaccine no matter what 🙄 These are the same clowns who said that lockdown was useless and are now shouting that death rates are down, missing the obvious link between the two.
Yet more evidence that the Tories strategy of stockpiling vaccines and mass-injecting OAPs with untested drugs is more about controlling the headlines than following science.
Do I detect a hint of joy in your reporters voice when reporting this story. My mother’s panicking now...thank you very fkn much.
Why was it necessary to have this as the top story on BBCRadio2 today - you lot can’t help yourself piling on the bad news, keep feeding the propaganda machine....yawn.
MbuyiseniNdlozi
This headline is misleading please change it
MbuyiseniNdlozi Its not South African Variant. Dont mislead. Its got a name: 501Y.V2 Variant.
Don’t listen to this lot.. b.s merchants
Nothing to say when you are not brainwashed!! Except 2 countries in Africa have now said that they will not be treating their people with the Experimental Covid Vaccine!! They are basically choosing fate (God) they said & so will many other people. HowManyMoreDoses 🥺🤢😡😡
This headline is terrible and does not reflect the article at all. Negligent clickbait.
We all need a laugh eh.. go check out The Spudz on TikTok.
What a misleading title. What has happened to the BBC? Clickbait over honesty.
More lies from the government back up by the BBC propaganda machine. All this to keep society locked up. This cabinet needs to be removed
Considering the virus is meant to weaken in every variant, from what we have been told, in most viruses it does but this one doesn’t seem to be weakening that much. This is a concern, but tomorrow the scientists will say the so called vaccines work honest.
If they want to test it against this variant why don’t they do it over in South Africa itself where the most cases are ? Or have they and it’s just not mentioned in this piece?
Not peer reviewed and only talking and mild infections, wtaf are you doing?
That is :- limited to preventing hospitalisations & deaths!!! less effective at preventing sniffles!!
Unfortunately neither the bbc nor Ofcom care. BBC could literally write whatever they want and nothing would happen.. yet other more qualified people getting removed from Twitter..
South African variant so bad hardly anyone in South Africa dying from it.Every day more recoveries than new infections.(and that's without any vaccinations)
I wasn’t aware that we had enough cases in the UK of this variant for any study to be valid and meaningful.
Only plugging the possible negative side at full volume Despite two of the worlds experts explain the reality. But then the BBC paparazzi just couldn’t tell the truth as it would not fit into their anti government propaganda rhetoric, scaremongering They go from bad to disgusting
more info forthcoming? keep us informed people.
'Limited' against mild disease, unknown against severe - Even when the full study is published the data is limited and short term there's no reason to get too concerned at this stage; but the govt will almost certainly use this for justification and propaganda.
When you report 'for the clicks', you're no longer a news service. You're Fox News and undefendable.
Why are you releasing untested opinion as news?
This is fantastic news for govt. and those happy to spend more time with close family. It means lockdown for many many more months, until a vaccine is found for the SA variant. We've already seen some SA cases in the uk. The show will remain on the road for a while now.
Misleading headline! Fixed it for you!! Tests prove that the AZ vaccine offers protection against severe disease and hospitalisation
I'll give you the credit for using the correct terminology. Study 'sugests'. Research suggests, it does not necessarily confirm.
Once again bbc doing the best they can do throw a bad look at something. The use of language from both written and verbal reporting is wank. Anything to capture attention.
'But the firm said it believed the vaccine COULD protect against severe disease' Tweet reported. No excuse for this fear mongering.
The important bit.
V V disappointed by Beeb here. It is a vaccine - not immunisation- this headline is (intentionally?) misleading and negative. ( Beeb not only ones who do this - curse of 24/7 news and click collection?) Happy to feel ill for a couple of days if not serious
Well done the bad news broadcasting company BNBC
So it still helps prevent ‘severe’ disease from the variant, just not ‘mild’ disease. What’s the problem with that exactly?
Not correct
But none of the 2,000 patients in the study died or were hospitalised, which shows there’s 2 sides to every story.
Okay....South African variant:...is AstraZeneca working on tweaking the vaccine before the second jabs are due for millions or are people to take Novavax vaccine when released? Is there a plan
Meanwhile in SOUTH AFRICA, cases are falling and restrictions are being eased! 🤷♂️
This is typical BBC reporting and click bait. You’ve lifted the negative part rather than the positive, where it suggests it will prevent against serious illness… 🤦🏻♂️
Oh crap. Hopefully the fact that it's a small study gives us a degree of hope still.
BBC News always opting for the most negative spin with coronavirus headlines. A year ago i supported the licence fee, I’d back ending it now.
Misleading headline...
At first glance its not a problem in SA as they are opening up with minimal infections. Guess we have to continue the show though
Suggests lol ha ha such a bbc word ... ie it’s a get out of jail free card lol fake news
Vaccination macht frei
it's never going to end 😂
You will not be afraid of the terror by night, Or of the arrow that flies by day; 6 Of the pestilence that [a]stalks in darkness, Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. 7 A thousand may fall at your side And ten thousand at your right hand, But it shall not approach you.
Lockdown forever. Better safe than sorry
Shouldn't tank tops offer more protection?
How about making the headline 'Jab effective against serious illness from South African variant'. I swear GB News can't come soon enough. The current media has no credibility left.
BBC的新闻都能行,见鬼了,这个无良媒体报道中国就是谎话连篇
BREAKING: Magic arm bullsh*t doesn't work. We all need bigger magic arm bullsh*t (for a 'disease' with a 98%+ survival rate).

This is not good
What a misleading headline.........
u mean its useless
This doesn’t look great at first glance but there’s some important points to note: • The sample sizes were relatively small (2000+), and the study has not yet been peer-reviewed • No patients involved died or were hospitalised UniofOxford declined to comment on the results.
Amazing what a 'study' can find from a (part?) of 100 cases.
So we were lied to again by Bozo and the bandits.
All part of the plan. Amazing that many are still taken in by this.
Trump hasn't been jailed yet?
Well shit.
病毒战胜UK👍👍👍
It not South African
that's ...... not great
