There were 92,368 new cases reported, a significant spike after 52,295 cases were reported on Sunday.
"Given the increased rate of reinfections with the Omicron variant this meant that the ratio between reported cases and estimated total infections was changing making it difficult to fully understand the direction of travel of the epidemic in England over recent weeks," Prof Hunter said.
The latest spike in cases is not placing a heavy burden on the health system and the country has a high vaccination rate, officials have said. The organising committee for the Games has reported 200 cases since 23 January among airport arrivals and those involved in the Olympics"closed-loop" bubble.
Some athletes have been shut out from the Games after testing positive on arrival, with others put into isolation after returning a positive result but are asymptomatic. Mr Morrison said there was a heightened disappointment when COVID vaccines did not slow down the Omicron spread. Ms Bellis, who is 25 weeks pregnant, tried to return to New Zealand, initially joining the thousands of overseas-based New Zealanders attempting to get a place on the mandatory hotel isolation.
Meanwhile, high end-of-life costs and global inequities in palliative care access have led to millions suffering at the end of life.
