Five things you need to know about the coronavirus pandemic this Sunday morning.

in a Christmas season hit hard by the Covid pandemic and bad weather. Around the world, nearly 4,400 flights were cancelled on Saturday - and more than 2,500 of them were in the US, according to air traffic site FlightAware. Airlines have been struggling with staff self-isolating as well as heavy snow hitting central US. Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports have been particularly bad hit, making up for 1,000 of the country's cancellations.

Since 14 December, at least 16 of the 25 workers at the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station have caught the virus. All are fully vaccinated and officials say cases remain mild so far. Every resident was offered the chance to leave on a scheduled flight in two weeks' time, but chose to stay and continue their work, Joseph Cheek, a project manager for the International Polar Foundation, told the BBC.

Masks destroy the self esteem, mental health & education for deaf and other students who rely on seeing faces. They can’t understand peers so miss class discussions & therefore education, safety instructions & their self esteem is destroyed. Mental health impact is devastating.

Insist on how the tests can differentiate between covid-19 and a common cold.

50% of that 25% will be swinging the fkn lead.

I’d love to see evidence of non medical cloth masks effectiveness when worn for prolonged periods in a classroom given they’re designed to stop large droplets up close not aerosol spread. As for calling air purifiers a ‘basic human right’, what a load of bollocks.

Pishing in the wind. Many HS kids have had it already, they don't wear the masks properly, most people aren't worried about Covid anymore.

Once again, kids are expected to bear the brunt of measures for a disease that barely effects them. Previous school spikes haven’t transferred to other age groups. I assume that politicians will be showing solidarity by wearing masks for 8 hours per day until this is lifted?

So once again nadhimzahawi doing almost nothing to protect those within primary schools and stop the spread of omicron through schools and their communities! r4today edutwitter schools

Face masks on children is child abuse. This is being done again to install fear and show who is in control.

Hopefully mostly pupils will spread Omicron in their families and govt will keep checking effectiveness of their vaccine. What a joke

Covid: Workplaces told to plan for absences of up to 25%Rising Covid cases could see a worst case scenario of up to a quarter of staff off work, the government says. Another hysterical response and scaremongering. Imagine if there are only 5 in your department as there were with us when I was working. We covered 6 counties for dialysis patients and satellite units. It was hard enough with annual leave and sickness. Thankfully we had a great team and rarely sick. On call 24/7 though. The Tories - ALWAYS LATE. 3x late lockdowns Late to close borders with India Late to road map Afghanistan Late to address HGV & goods shortages Late now to action restrictions NOW to offset economic impacts of Omicron INCOMPETENT TORIES.

Boris Johnson asks ministers to plan for Covid workplace absences of up to 25%Public sector leaders told to prepare for worst case scenario after record numbers of daily infections Must be expecting a magic staff tree Just wanting to double check the timestamp on this story. Yup, 2022, as opposed to several weeks ago, when such planning might have been an idea... rather than waiting until the proverbial hit the fan. It'd be nice if the govt broke that toxic cycle even just once. 🤦‍♂️
