I don’t think it should be for everyone - for example, I’m lucky that self isolating would have no financial impact on me. But I’m sure it would help a lot of people - some aren’t t so lucky to be able to WFH, and still get paid if their ill.

This is such a flawed idea, the payment will not stop people ignoring isolation rules, the only difference will be they will have a heavier wallet to carry to the shops!
I isolated 4x's last year, the last being when it turned out I actually had the virus. I still stay as socially exclusionary as possible still but I must say it has not done a great deal of good for my mental well being. At least I know 100% that my contraction ended in me! 🙃

It's a one-off payment. Five weeks sick pay is not worth weeks of discomfort with COVID-19 & the lingering aftermaths. For some people the consequences can last for months. If you want people to stay home & self-isolate, you've got to make sure they have enough money to live on.
