Influx of lockdown visitors to Dartmoor raises concerns about damage to ancient woodland

An influx of lockdown visitors taking exercise on Dartmoor has raised concerns about an ancient woodland.

The woods, which cover about nine acres , are thought to be the remnants of a forest dating back thousands of years. The woodland, with its moss-caked trees, is an iconic feature and appears in many photos of the national park. But the lockdown has prompted more people onto the moor amid a loss of other activities, said Mr Sanders, a park warden and member of the Dartmoor National Park Authority.

"Moss and lichen can take hundreds of years to form, but it only takes five minutes to destroy," he said.

Same in the picturesque Test Valley village where I live. In normal times it’s just locals out walking their dogs. During lockdown it’s busy with visitors here for a nice walk, to look at the river and thatched cottages and to drop their litter.

Stripping moss and setting fires must be on the list of human rights, surely, or they wouldn't dream of doing it

I went there 3 years ago in the rain in summer had it to myself
