Covid-19 app users can't get isolation payment

People who are told to go into isolation in an alert from the NHS Covid-19 app in England and Wales will not be eligible for government support.

Now the Department of Health has said the payments will not be available to app users, as reported by Sky News.A spokesperson said: "The NHS Covid-19 app is voluntary with users of it remaining anonymous, which means that currently people are not eligible for the support payment if they are advised by the app to self-isolate."

But eventually the government conceded that, as there was no way of knowing who had received these alerts, obeying their instructions would be voluntary. The NHS Covid-19 app is built on a framework designed by Apple and Google, which is designed to give as little data as possible to governments and health authorities.A previous version of the app which would have seen more data collected centrally, was abandoned after concerns were raised by privacy campaigners.

This was due to data protection groups and platform owners so open massively to abuse and fraud so quite correctly you can't expect any gov to hand money out.

What about when the app tells you you've been in contact with someone then 2 minutes later sends another alert saying it was a mistake? 🙃 (for context it was the first check in I'd done)

The self isolation alerts on the app aren't legally enforceable? It also seems a lot of people can't/won't use the app. So if the number of users is low, I'm failing to see the purpose of the app.

So why would you download the app again? You get punished if you don’t follow its advice, but not supported while you do. Better to remain ignorant and not face the risk of fines and loss of wages.

I think you all have misunderstood. If the app tells you to isolate it’s strictly voluntary and advisory. If you call HMRC and say you need £500 because the app said isolate. They don’t know it’s you, because the app is not linked to you as it’s ANONYMOUS. So calm down people.
