Councillor expelled from party over sexual assault conviction

Cathal McLaughlin, was convicted of sexual assault under the Sexual Offences Scotland Act 2009, section 3 at trial on July 11, 2022. The offence took place on October, 15 2021.

In a statement, Sinn Fein said they have written to the Causeway Coast and Glens councillor to inform him of his expulsion from the party after he was convicted of the crime, which is understood to have taken place in Scotland. A spokesperson said: “Sinn Féin has written to Councillor Cathal McLaughlin upon receipt of information that he has been convicted in a Scottish court of a serious criminal offence.The spokesperson went on to say that McLaughlin failed to notify the party that he was subject to 'criminal proceedings'.

They added: “Given the severity of the offence, his membership of Sinn Féin is terminated with immediate effect." The councillor who represents the Ballymoney area had previously served on the old Ballymoney Borough Council before being co-opted after the transition to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
