As guidance on wearing face masks to slow coronavirus evolves, what does the science say about when and where to wear them?

When can they protect people from the virus?

World Health Organization special envoy Dr David Nabarro has suggested that more widespread use of masks will become"the norm" as the world adjusts to living with Covid-19.Coronavirus is spread by droplets that can spray into the air when those infected talk, cough and sneeze.

But he said masks might also need to be worn by non-medical workers who are in frequent contact with others and who can't distance themselves, such as people operating cash registers, or hairdressers. But Dr Nabarro warned against complacency:"Don't imagine that you can do what you like when you are wearing a mask. [It] doesn't give you the excuse to disregard social distancing."Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK's chief scientific adviser, says there is a review ongoing at the moment and it has already seen"more persuasive" data on it stopping you passing on the virus, rather than catching it. However, the advice has yet to change.

JUST WEAR ONE. I actually want this stigma about facemasks to change in this country. You should just wear them as default when you feel sick as a mark of respect to others to not pass on your germs. I hate how some people view this negatively about them.

Most people know when and where they should wear masks. They have done the great job on protecting themselves and others as well. It’s too late if people have to wait for a guidance, no matter how good it is.

A great pity SadiqKhan doesn't actually believe in this guidance nor WHO advice 'Only wear a mask when you're ill'!🤦‍♂️

Yet again the armchair experts decide to question, and sometimes dismiss, science from the experts. Of course, people are entitled to their opinion but why not keep it to yourself unless you are suitably qualified to make your scientific response public?

What do you mean 'evolves'? 🤬 Wearing a mask was proven to reduce the spread of COVID19 long ago. Government didn't buy PPE when they could have, so like good shills, you've been spreading the lie that the public shouldn't wear masks. bbcnews tories

We’re told to stay 2m apart based on the distance droplets from your nose and mouth can travel, but there’s no need to cover your nose and mouth? Also, save them for sick people and health workers who need them? So now they work? It’s a supply issue, this clip is dangerous.

I’m sorry, but assuming supplies to NHS staff and key workers are not compromised, there is nothing in this piece which convinces me they should not be worn. It also assumes people would not be wise enough to follow normal hygiene rules. A bit condescending perhaps?

I had a mask on but also glasses. My glasses steamed up creating droplets which may put me in danger I think.

Masks should be worn when shopping and working , it will help to stop the spread of this virus 🦠

From Belgium and the answer is: Everywhere!

This is bonkers! It stands to reason wearing a mask in public (working or exercising) reduces transmission. This is bad advice and will lead to spreading C-19 again after lockdown ends. You can make a disposable masks out of kitchen roll and elastic bands:

Where on earth would we get one anyway

WHO one day says a thing the other day another. Plus let's not forget, that they also misled this situation and didn't inform about it when they knew. Stop bombarding us with nonsense and do your work properly. No more confusion.

As minghella said recently, he wasn't aware he had the infection and moved freely about his daily business. The mask protects others from you as do gloves. It's not 100% but it's a start.

Thanks for the confusion highly appreciated.

Yes you should!

I don’t and I won’t be warring a face mask. I keep Two meters apart from others I watch what you touch never touch your face as well as wash wash and wash again. I tried warring a face mask and hated it couldn’t breathe through it.

You'd also notice if it got dirty...

I don't want a mask.. I want a full face plastic see through attachment.. like welding mask type.. this would protect me from say pollution, bird droppings, sneezes, coughs, rain, wind, exhaust fumes, it would look so much better, and I'd feel great about my clean face. Yeh.. :)

night How you know if you don’t have the virus? What about if someone starts coughing?Do what’s feels right for you,Government and science change daily, but life once is gone it doesn’t come back,I finding weird that we as a nation can’t provide in abundance face masks FREE for anybody!!

That’s true! However, in this city they have ordered to wear masks all the time, especially in all public places

They wanting healthy people to catch the virus and use their plasma. People stop listening to the Government. They are still going of their plan herd immunisation! Do what u think is best for you. Wear a mask!

The key problem is who knows themselves healthy or not? What if he is just no symptoms contagious? So, everyone need to wear mask when going out. Very simple.

When I get inside the supermarket I wear my nose and mouth mask and my reading glasses. The workers are now wearing gloves, but they really should all be provided with masks - the supermarkets can take the cost out of their boosted profits.

BBCLookEast This is conflating 'protecting yourself' with reducing transmission overall and protecting others. The case for masks in both situations differ. This journalism isn't clear and hasn't picked up on some of the new analysis.

How about using your common sense, all the time outside of your home.

I’m not wearing one because even if a person with covid coughs near me droplets can get in through the eyes anyway. So, wearing to stop catching it via social transmission is pointless unless covering eyes too. Plus the sweatiness and itchy beard will make me touch my face more.

I've been saying the US homemade masks are a placebo and only trained ppl with proper masks are only safe.

You just don’t have enough masks. You’re too scared that you cannot even garante the medical staff have enough PPE, without speaking providing masks for the public like other counties. Failed to admit the initial ‘herb immunity’ policy was wrong, failed in mass testing, failed!!!

Très bien fait!

I think it is inevitable Britain will make it mandatory for everyone to wear a mask. How else would you lift the restrictions safely? Would you get on a packed train or tube in a fee weeks without a mask on?

Where do we get these magic masks from? Are the govt going to supply them? I think they should as they let this virus get out of hand. Why should we pay for them if they become compulsory!

It protects others, if you are carrier of the virus. Leave the medical masks to the medical staff and get a sewn mask for every individual. We do that in Germany for a few weeks now and it brings down the curve. 👍

night Why does the BBC keep pushing masks, despite experts! Cos they're nothing but cunts of course.

A simple question. If you say mask can’t stop the virus, so why you suggest medical staff should wear them? Just logically doesn’t make sense.

Good luck getting me to wear one in this fake pandemic.

‘no evidence’,doesn’t mean ‘no need’. Wear or not, is our choice. Everyone can make decisions by ourselves. I can understand u if u don’t wear masks. Please understand us if we wear masks. Respect each other, please.

This is weak journalism and muddies supply with effectiveness. What have you got to loose by wearing one? If you're asymptomatic would you forgive yourself if you sneezed over an asthmatic friend when a mask could have contained that sneeze? Look easy to Asia!

Of course they work half of the objections to wearing the mask in this video are because of stuff you might not do if you wear one. But I think most sensible people will wear a mask, keep distances and still wash there hands without touching their face.

The mask isn’t perfect, maybe it’s just a psychological crutch, but it’s better than nothing. It makes you feel less helpless when you leave the safety of your home.

masks = FALSE sense of security... COVID19 COVID $brka $msft $wmt $tsla

Medical protection must be adhered to to heal the whole world

I know it's hard to change our minds, but the good sign is that we eventually realize the necessity of wearing masks to slow the spread of the virus. Good move!

Wash your hands Practice social distancing Wear a mask keep your aerosolized droplets to yourself

I wear a mask when out and about, not because I think it adds to my protection, but helps remind me not to touch my face.

Common sense says wear them if you are out and about, especially if you are anywhere where social distancing might be difficult to achieve.

a piece of paper in the mask improves efficiency, if you don't have a good N95 paper is much less porous than any cloth
