BBC Monitoring, Chinese Media AnalystA Chinese city near the Russian border has now “imposed a lockdown on all residential communities and villages”,The city of Harbin, which has a population of 10 million people, is implementing strict measures today, similar to those imposed on the central city of Wuhan during the early stages of the Covid-19 outbreak in January.

Media are widely reporting that Harbin’s government has prohibited non-locals, and any vehicles without local licence plates, from entering the city. Communities and villages have also been instructed to guard compounds, and to ensure that anybody entering or leaving can prove that they are healthy. Residents must not go out without a mask, and they are now being told they must comply with temperature checks.

Global Times says that residents are encouraged to report any known returnees who fail to comply with these procedures.Yesterday, state media reported that 4,106 people had recently been screened for the virus, after two clusters of Covid-19 infections were discovered at hospitals there.Article share tools

Saying people died of coronavirus rather than with coronavirus is very misleading. Wouldn't many of these people died soon anyway .

We should be concentrating on excess deaths year to date as per Nick triggle 16 Apr report and then asking the difficult question how many of these are just deaths brought forward. Gives a much better idea of what is happening.

Makes no sense this. We have been self isolating for 5 weeks. With an incubation period of 14 days. How are people still catching the virus if they have stayed at home like advised. Makes no sense at all

The average mortality rate in the UK is 1400 per day. It would be interesting to know how much this average has changed if you include the Covid-19 deaths being reported.

UK has 5% of world cases and 10% of world deaths. Why?

bbclaurak I think the key here is “ with it”. We need to know how many people died of it .. Without that , this a meaningless figure and tells us nothing and does not justify an extreme restriction on our lives

According to a nurse I know the figures are all rubbish as it takes 10 days for them to get through officially.

How many people have died at home from it (suspected)? How many people have died in care homes (suspected)? We are WELL over the 20,000 dead figure... For some sense of reality, that’s potentially well over 20,000 families that have been devastated by covid-19.

Just been to one of the two Tesco's I go too. Pleased to see one way system and checkout being achieved. But people not always self distancing even some staff. A few of us had masks and gloves on glad I did!
