Follow live: Education Secretary Gavin Williamson leads UK's daily coronavirus briefing, as schools weigh whether to reopen

Image caption: The reopening of schools is one of the key challenges for the government

And with a respiratory infection, if you're not as severely affected - so you're not coughing and sneezing - you won't infect other people as much. "So we know that the average transmission rate for a child will be lower than the average for an adult," he said."But is the average child 10 times less transmissible? Half as transmissible? We don’t know the answer to that and that’s quite a big difference."

But did they die from the virus? Why are the authorities being cagey about the truth? Why do they want countries locked down and livelihoods and economies destroyed? BorisJohnson tell the truth. It will come out eventually anyway.

How many have recovered?

Another sad day - RIP to those we have lost and heart felt prayers to those families who have lost loved ones. Everyone else please stay safe

Tell that to the idiots in London protesting today

Don't worry people it will be okay...the government are now using sniffer dogs to detect Covid-19 on people....wtf

BBCPolitics bbcquestiontime BethRigby bbclaurak BBCPolitics I WANT TO KNOW WHATS HAPPENING ABOUT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS THAT ARE PAYING OVER THE ODDS FOR HARDLY ANY EDUCATION!

Obviously with last week reporting daily positive cases of 3000+ And continues to see high reported deaths each day, would it have not been prudent to hold off relaxing lockdown or “weekend of freedom” as some press reported it.

Not even 2% of those 'tested' never mind 'had it and we don't know.' Then take away the mount 'linked' to Covid rather than dying 'of' Covid. Then take away people with multiple other conditions in care homes. I'd be VERY surprised if it was over 0.01%. Just like flu.

ChrisMasonBBC ChrisMasonBBC while GavinWilliamson oozes sympathy for disadvantaged children, in a storytelling tone reserved for Jackanory of the 70's, why does the govt he is part of, continue the causes of in work poverty and usage of food banks? I think that's a reasonable question.

Slides are being cut off, not sure if that’s bbc or gov? Really annoying!

Could you sort of the slides out? Usually they're covered up, today they are totally useless, most of the numbers are cut off completely.

It’s almost like the herd immunity idea that delayed lockdown for two weeks has cost us thousands of lives.

Cannot read the slides today!

Paving the way to use the kids as cannon fodder !!!

Maybe someone can ask how nursery staff can look after small children and babies including comforting them and wiping bums/sick while keeping themselves safe and maintaining rules? Its essentially coming to intimate contact with dozens of families COVID19 nurseries childcare

Sort the slide sizes out so we can see them!

Slides don’t fit my tv screen!!

All emotion from GavinWilliamson . Still no actual science. Trying to paint himself as protector of the vulnerable in a govt. that has underfunded schools, social services, surestart, NHS....the list goes on. Shameless.

We all know how much children need to be in school and how much they need to be around their peers, however, until you can guarantee it’s 100% safe for both children and staff, schools should remained closed!

ChrisMasonBBC Doing just that. It is like a very badly delivered sermon by a bored church minister.

COVID19 they may not be with their teachers. They may not be with their friends. They won’t be able to access the kind of activities they are used to because we have to social distance and need to manage the learning from those at home too!!

Gavin Williamson has the personality of a potato peeling.

I’m going to tell u this open the pubs open the shops and schools stop going on about it

Like if you think the numbers are fudged!

We need a age breakdown on all these deaths to show and emphasise that vast majority over 75 and involving care homes

And how many died that hadn't been tested I wonder...

What else did they have?

lottyleeming There will never be an end deaths figure for coronavirus. It will get to a point where it will stop being released as with every other virus. It will never end.

So is it really time to lift restrictions? Really?

BBCPolitics I have a huge doubt, since my childhood I have been hearing and reading that USA UK France Italy Spain Germany these are super power countries and developed nations. Then why these many deaths

If heads don’t roll for this your first trip after lockdown should be to B&Q to pick up your shackles.

How can BorisJohnson DominicRaab MattHancock sleep at night? Total negligence by the Conservatives killed thousands. coronavirus savenhs covid19 chaos negligent unorganised onholiday latelockdown murder nhspaycuts NHSheroes torychaos

BBCPolitics So that means 55,000 deaths in total, not the fiddled figures coming from Hancockups haf hour.

CCP virus.

Out of the care homes deaths, 9 out of 10 had underlying heath conditions either dementia or Alzheimer’s, what was their quality of life before they died 🤔

RIP

Good shottt chyna

It's going so well, tory policy is impeccable and very safe. They said 20,000 would be a catastrophe so what's a catastrophe doubled? My suggestion is we call it a Johnson.

BBCPolitics You lying! Tell the truth! Very interesting facts talk in Italy. About Coronavirus and numbers. 🎤

Only with and died from are different. We need those facts.

A catastrophic loss of life and there are morons demonstrating in parks about their rights whilst chanting, 'no 5G' and 'no vaccines'.

How many people have recovered from Covid-19 in the UK? It's a simple question, the government and mainstream media are avoiding it though which creates even more suspicion. I have asked this question multiple times.

34,466.... how many of them ‘died of Covid 19’? And how many of them died of something else while testing positive for Covid 19? Would be quite interesting to see... FakePandemic

244 in hospital which is where people in the general population end up so easing lockdown is right thing to do. Plus, these figures are deaths as far back as 30th April to 14th May not the last 24 hours.

The slowing of cancer screenings/treatments has caused an extra 138deaths/day on top of the normal 450/day sad cancer deaths. Thats 8k extra in the past 2months. As trump said at the start, real risk the cure killing more than the problem

Breakdown to help explain how the number the gov't announces each day is calculated (like today's 468) and why it sometimes doesn't quite equal the individual figures reported in the media.

More lies here

Tory....

Cancel the Premiership season already.

UK coronavirus live: union leaders to meet government about reopening English schoolsGavin Williamson says it is his ‘duty’ to get children back to education, while unions warn of risks of wider reopening of schools Resist. No schools should open. The future generation is not for the tories experiments. Government should be safeguarding them and teachers. Let parliament go back to physically sitting in the commons first. Children have 4-6 weeks left of school. Why are you guys in such a rush to get them back? Can't believe that teachers are complaining after all this time claiming to be on the front line (a local school here had a pupil to staff ratio of 27 to 2 (pupils)) and now they are asked to do more they come up with a million reasons why not - the shop workers didn't and don't
