Boris Johnson says it is a"national priority" and a"moral duty" to get all pupils back in class next month, raising the prospect of closing shops, pubs and restaurants in local lockdowns to allow schools to stay open.
In a newspaper article, the prime minister writes that"social justice demands" that classrooms are full again, and says education is crucial for children's welfare and future - especially the most disadvantaged. He warns of the"spiralling economic costs" of parents and carers being unable to work, adding:"Keeping our schools closed a moment longer than absolutely necessary is socially intolerable, economically unsustainable and morally indefensible."Mr Johnson is understood to favour only closing schools as the last resort after scientific advisers warned further interventions may be needed to reopen classrooms in England next month.
Children's commissioner for England Anne Longfield had said the reopening of schools"should be prioritised", insisting they must be first to reopen and last to close during any reintroduction of restrictions.But schools minister Nick Gibb said this week that the government could not"decree" that classroom education would be prioritised, instead saying decisions would be made by local health chiefs.
I'm fed up with hearing from people in the education system how concerned they are for children's education and welfare. Obviously not concerned enough to give up their 6 week holiday and teach through the summer in case we're locked down during Autumn/Winter!
Govt had a moral duty to establish testing of all NHS and care staff, residents and test, track and trace of quantity incl 24hr results. They have failed with this.

Covid will spread just as quick through schools (if not quicker) Why are schools opening and jobs where many patents work shutting? The idea of schools opening was to help the ecobomy. This guy really has no idea.
I couldn’t agree with him more, any TeachersUnions that reject this are simply pushing a lazy agenda, millions of people have had to make sacrifices during COVID19 so teachers need to as well. Unions need to understand the public feeling on this subject, U will have NO support
I’m tired of Boris Johnson’s stance on this pandemic. Children are sooooo important but NO play centres, libraries or playgrounds open; even though these poor children have been without any meaningful facilities since March but pubs are open 😡😡😡😡
At this point, do we have to close anywhere?. Can they not just ensure everyone who tests positive are paid properly to self isolate, so the rest of us can carry on. Goodness knows how businesses are meant to survive this uncertainty.

Yeah so they can be brainwashed and confirmed to become slaves for the mass corporations, corrupt systems, laws, white wealthy heterosexuals and one of the 4200+ religious belief theories. My boys are never going back, deal with it.
The national priority should be to reduce numbers to an absolute minimum and ensure we have proper testing, tracking and tracing nationwide. We need to be doing everything to stop the cross in to Flu season.

I'm no fan of Boris, quite the opposite in fact but we absolutely must get all kids back to school. We cannot allow our children further more loss in their education and development.
